Real Latins are an ancient tribe of people living on the Italian peninsula. They were there when Rome was built.

then in the second half of the 20th century, Latin came to mean all the Spanish-speakers form Mexico on south. (Latin America).

So, at this point, a majority of the Spanish speakers in this country can be referred to as Latinos, but they like to be called Hispanic and, at least here in NYC, consider themselves a separate race.
