Dogs, cats, horses etc. have no concept of understanding our situation much less motives. The concept of being upset because the rent's short or the boss is a jerk or whatever...they simply don't understand it because those worries don't occur to them. They have food, water, shelter, you. They are happy. They sense when you're sad and don't like it - but understanding the big picture they just don't have the capacity to do.
I've had dogs and horses both who when I'm down will be thisclose and stand patiently and put up with me until I'm back to normal - but that isn't really empathy as much as acceptance and often forgiveness.
