On the day of summer solstice, the sun is at it highest point in the sky, traveling the highest path across the sky. When the sun is to the side, there are shadows because a part of you is blocking the sun for something else. However, when the sun is right above you, the only thing you are blocking out from the sun is the place that you are standing in. Barely any shadows appear. The only shadows that appear are just the ones underneath you.

Hope this helps!

June 21 high noon local time the reaches the highest position in the sky on the northern hemisphere. The higher the sun the shorter the shadow. That is the longest day of the year. The summer begins.
Only on the the northern border of the tropics, the tropic of Cancer, the sun rises to exactly perpendicularly above the horizon. That is where the shadows disappear completely. (Your shadow is between your feet !!)

On the southern hemisphere all that is true for December 21.

They don't "disappear". Under a tent it would be shaded, for example. The only way you wouldn't see a shadow from an object like a pole would be if the pole was near the Tropic of Cancer on June 21 and the time was around local noon. Then the pole would be in the way of its own shadow being cast on the ground.

If you are near the Tropic of Cancer on the summer solistice at about noon'ish, the sun will be directly overhead and your shadow will only be beneath your feet.
