Given that governments (of all ideologies) have murdered 100-200 million people in the last century alone (through war, starvation, genocide, etc), do you think that there is any hope that people will stop turning to the State to "help" them "solve" their problems?

Elsbeth: by "The State", I mean the system of control that subjects individual human beings to mandatory dictats. The modern state as we know it was born after the Treaty of Westphalia, 1648. The altenative to the state would amount to individual human beings governing themselves through voluntary agreements and contracts, and no central authority.

No, just look at us here in America. Though suffering a decode of defeats the Democratic party still have a huge number of followers, all waiting for the chance to vote themselves a welfare check.

Look at the poor souls in New Orleans they sat there waiting for the Government to help them before even considering helping themselves.

It is a truely pathetic side of the human race, but Socialism in every method it has ever been tried has failed, because it rewards laziness and punishes success. Relying on the government is a one way ticket to despair.

People will always turn to us for help as long as the bleeding heart liberals are willing to give away our wealth. Hitler killed 11 Million ( 6 mil were Jews ) Stahlin killed 60 million of his own country men. After WW I I we only found this out. But these aren't the countries that seek our aid. These are the isolationists that stand off with the U.S. Governments know that they cannot beg from us if they have bad human rights records like China. Many countries have no record of genocide, starvation or acts of unprovoked war. On the other hand there are still countries that practice this as well as human trafficking (slavery) and we keep track of them.

That is an interesting question. My thought would be why do "govenments" kill people, withhold food, start wars, etc... Most of these come from differing ideologies of how people should live their lives. That may be religous or politcal views. Although a utopian society is a nice thought, the reality is that it isn't plausible. As long as human beings have the freedom of thought (which can't be controlled by any government, only actions can) you will have disagreements as to how to live your life. Eventually, due to animal instinct, we will act out on those disagreements.

Look back through history. Religions were the main source of war. Christians vs. Jews, Muslims vs. Christians, and even today, Muslims vs. Muslims.

I got a little lost with this question...

Do you mean "the State" as in, turning to any organized political group for aid/problem resolution,

or do you mean "the States," as in the United States of America?

___
Regardless, I think it would be great if we saw more grassroots problem solving and intervention, and new movements like those are growing every day... but then again, genocide can be carried out in a grassroots form (without an official government sanction, or in violation of government sanctions too)...so I guess I'm lost again.

I think your totals are a little low. As long as we rely on the government to solve our problems, the government will continue to have their way with us.

Religion has killed more than all wars combined. I don't understand how the state helping people has anything to do with governments killing people.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE SYSTEM HAS PROGRAMMED US (via law) TO RELY ON THEM.
IF, WE MADE AN ATTEMPT TO HANDLE OUR BUSINESS, THE SAME AS THE GOVERNMENT. THEY WILL TELL US 'WE CANNOT TAKE THE LAW IN OUR HANDS', AND THEY WILL LOCK US IN THE SLAVE CAGE.
MYSELF PERSONALLY, I WASN'T BORN TO BE LOCKED IN A CAGE. A CHANGE IN THE STYLE OF GOVERNMENT DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE CHANGED.
