OK going travelling world-wide after graduation, got £58k stashed away which should last me a fair while as we'll be in a gropu of six, going overland.

We plan to travel off the beaten track (EG, through proper rough country as opposed to back packer trails), carving our own paths and carrying all our own gear.

A friend has advised to, in countries where it is legal, carry a concealed firearm for my own protection and that of the group, eg, a small handgun.

While we have already decided that in some areas we will indeed be carrying rifles purely to catch food (very rarely though), do you think the idea of a handgun for personal protection is a bit over the top, even though it would be legal in the area where we would carry weapons?

Thanks!

We are a joint British-Polish team and all have been trained in firearms handling- I myself shoot target sports as a serious hobby (full bore rifle)

OK, 1: My £58k is in a bank, I would not carry it in cash but make withdrawals when and where possible.

2: A firearm would not be removed from the country of purchase, rather a cheap one would be bought in each country where it is lega

Is there a reason for you to fear personal attack? Do you want a "fear factor" to be part of the tone set for your adventure? Also remember, whatever weapons you carry present the possibility that they can end up being used against you.
Above all else, after you collect all the input from others, trust and act on what your guts (intuition) tell you.
Good Luck!! Expect the Best!! Have a Blast!! I'm impressed with your courage to get out and explore the world!!!
Many Blessings.

If you are coming to the States You should research the law in each state thoroughly. Some states will not permit concealment, some won't permit possession. In some of our western states you just might not be at the top of the foodchain and a largerbore sidearm 44mag or 45 long colt or the 454 round or possibly a shotgun with slugs ,carried externally might be a prudent preparation.

If it was me, I would avoid as many places as possible where there is a need to carry a firearm. However, if that is not an option then I think it is fine as long as you stick to what you said, ie. abiding by all the laws. You might need to check a ot of government websites of countries to be sure of their firearms policies. I think there are also some countries where they have different laws for different parts of the country. As long as you know what you are doing and plan everything as fine as you can then I think it is a good idea.

I'm an ex-Pat Brit now living in a place where concealed hand-guns are almost the norm (Virginia, US). As long as you are trained (and even-tempered!) I think it would be crazy not to take this safety-measure. Forgive me if I sound "condescending", I don't mean to, but often Britain creates a false sense of security in its people (because Britain itself is so safe) that could get you in trouble in many parts of the world. There are also parts of the world where carrying a non-concealed weapon (when legal) will act as a deterent to would-be criminals.

Then of course there are some parts of the world it just wouldn't be too smart to be in!

Have a ball! Good luck...

1) I know of NO country where you are allowed to bring in firearms

2) 58,000 pounds (English) ... Most all countries that I know of prohibit you from bringing in more than $10,000 or equivalent. That is a lot of money and would not advise you doing so.. thieves, etc etc. You could possibly put the money in a bank .. get a credit card (other than Discover card) and when you go into cities, go to the ATM machines and draw out money as you need it. You can also bring in traveller's checks

Don't blow all the money on travelling!!!! If you are off the beaten track, where will you find a cash machine? Invest in a house, rent it and have the rent put into your account. Work for cash in hand while you are away. Picking fruit and vegetables, cleaning, labouring etc. Good Luck, G-d speed

If you and another person are facing a gun at each others heads there is really only one outcome. I hate guns. Oh i dont know, do whatever you think. Why would you want to go to a place where everyone carries a gun? I really dont know what to say to be honest. I know of a goood investment for you wad of cash though, i saw a beautiful pair of Purple satin Jimmy Choo's...interested? A bargain at £640.... Get back to me on it matey!

I think you are totally "aff yer heed" to go over land and see the country, With that type of money you could live in luxury for at least a week??? But seriously, i don't think you should take hand guns with you, like you said there are gonna be six of you. WHY! do you need a gun ?

I would check the laws of the countries where you'll be. In some countries, it wouldn't be necessary, but if you are traveling in Iraq or other unstable areas of the world, it may be nice to have one if you are legally able to carry one.

yes its a bad idea!! you're being a bit over-the top!
I would thoroughly research the countries you wish to visit and avoid the dangerous areas- you can still go off the beaten track ,but just be careful.
