That pretty much depends upon what the company he works for is like. Most companies are relatively lenient about employess who have personal problems, but he may be in a position which is critical for the company. I would estimate no more than a month or two at the latest.

Even his immediate supervior may not know as it may depend on factors beyond his supervisors control.
