From what I can find in the literature, it sounds like a good idea. The greatest advantage I can think of over daily pills (from the perspective of a long-sober alcoholic) is that the choice to take the medicine is only necessary about once a month. I think that would take away one very strong source of anxiety for someone committed (or trying to be committed) to staying sober--the daily decision.

While the drug sounds very promising, clearly it is not the entire answer. While some drunks simply quit and stay quit forever, I have found success with that approach to be *quite* rare. For most of us, it's a process, and groups or counseling or rehab or some combination of these do a great deal of good.

Of course it is a drug, and all drugs have unwanted side effects. But the side effects of chronic alcohol consumption are so devastating that the trade offs sound reasonable.
