they have American football...which actually is adapted from rugby, play in England and most of common-wealth countries. So not to confuse with their popular game they called football..soccer.

Because when you play soccer you use long socks, not so in football where you have to always keep your foot on the ball.

It is funny, because the word soccer is derived "From alteration of 'assoc.', abbreviation of association football.".
It is American and in other words, they too believe it should be called Football but since they have a game that already took that name they use a word with illogical origins and keep a game named illogically as well.

i think it is because you "soc" the ball.
soc is kind of like kicking i guess. and they already have amercan football which i have no idea why it it named that because they rarely ever use a foot.

I hate to say this but if you read the ads , it is called World Soccer Cup.
I don't think we named it.
Our football is different.
