Unlike American football, when there is a penalty or an injury, the "clock" keeps running. They add the time used during the penalty or injury to the end of the half... called "stoppage time".

When you watch a game, notice that the clock on TV doesn't stop. Because of this, when 45 minutes elapse, there may not have been 45 minutes of actual soccer action. The referee on the field keeps track of this and adds on time at the end to make up for time lost due to goals, injuries, or substitutions. That is stoppage time.

The reason that they don't just have the clock stop is so the players play hard right until the final whistle, since they don't know for sure when that whistle will come.

The clock never stops so they lose some time during injuries or whatever. All of that time that they had to stop gameplay is added on at the end of the 45 minutes.

the clock in the game never stops so they have to make up for all the time lost for all the little things that happened while playing. It is usually around 3 minutes.

The 45 mins per half run without time out. the referee adds time at th eend of each half for injuries, substitutions, etc. Its his call as to how much time was wasted and needs to be added back.

Its extra time added on if there were injuries so like the players can play for the full time, and then they wont have missed out because of someones injuries
