Firstly, asparagus contains a number of sulphur containing chemicals including the amino acids cysteine and methionine. When not required by the body, these amino acids are broken down into a number of products that can be excreted in urine. Sulphur can cause nasty smells that could be responsible for asparagus pee. Another theory is that a breakdown product of another amino acid called asparagine (asparagine- amino- succinic- acid monoamide) in the urine is responsible for the foul smell of asparagus pee. A defect in the enzymes required to make this particular breakdown product could account for the fact that some people's pee just doesn't seem to stink how ever much asparagus they eat.
Asparagine was in fact first isolated from asparagus, where it is found in really high concentrations, and is now known to be one of the 20 common amino acids making up human proteins. It is known as a non-essential amino acid, meaning that we can synthesize it in the body and do not need to consume it. So if the smell bothers you too much you'll do just fine if you never eat asparagus again.

This is totally HARMLESS. It happens to me too. :) Approximately 40 to 50% of the population gets smelly urine after eating asparagus. Here's what happens, in a nutshell:
Asparagus has certain amino acids that contain a form of sulfur in them. When our bodies digest asparagus, these amino acids break down into a variety of different sulfur-containing compounds. Those compounds end up in our urine, and when we go to the bathroom, we notice the smell -- especially since our urine is concentrated in the rather small toilet bowl.
Again, not everyone's body responds this way to the amino acids, but for those of us who do -- it is natural and harmless!!

Asparagus is a diuretic, it helps the system to clean itself. You're getting rid of some impurities - it's not just the asparagus.

Don't panic, mine does too, only with asparagus. Something about an acid compound inthe asparagus itself. Actually its healthy, and cleans you out.

Its actually genetic. 3 out of 5 people get that effect. Its just a digestive enzyme that some people have. Don't worry about it. Hold your breath when you pee.
