I like Tivo. It's the best at what it does at the moment. With that said Tivo is one of a class of devices in general known as DVR's.
There are many things the Tivo does well. The problem is that Tivo is squarely in the middle of a revolutionary time in the home entertainment landscape -- namely the emergence of HDTV. HDTV is causing problems for a number of folks due to its bandwidth requirements, and Tivo is not alone. DirectTV also has issues.
From the looks of it the long awaited Tivo Series3 may very well be the device that HDTV early adopters are looking for, and could guaranteed Tivo's future. I think a lot is riding on the success of the Series 3, but it does look pretty sweet.

After having TiVo for several years, I find it almost impossible to watch TV without it:
Watch a program when i want to regardless of when it airs
Fast forward through commercials or dull parts of programs
Replay parts of programs in case I missed something.
No tapes to store, no problem finding recorded programs
Find out when a program is on merely by searching for the name
Plus many more

We love our TIVO. I am getting ready to buy a new one with the dual tuners.

1st reason i like tivo is i work weird hours so i can always record on 2 different channels of favorites when i am out.2ND reason i like tivo is i can do my own instant replays,and you ain't seen no-thin till you see a x-rated movie in slo-mo!

It's the best, but the satellite/cable guys are quickly copying all of the features.
