The original inhabitants of what we now call England were the Britons, whose nearest descendants now are probably most concentrated in Wales. The Romans occupied Britain from cAD50s until AD410, some settled, but the majority left when the army left. There was then what appears to be a mass migration from what we now term Germany of 'Anglo-Saxons' (a group term for a number of different tribes coming from the continent) from the 5th century AD. At around the 9th century some groups of Scandinavians (typically known as Vikings, although this term usually applies to the raiding groups rather than the settlers) started to settle in the north of England, Scotland, The Orkneys etc. In 1066 England (the land of the Angles, so Anglo-Saxons) was conquered by the French Normans and French was instituted as the court language in England. Technically the English refers to the Anglo-Saxons (English come from Angleish), so the people who lived here before were the British, probably speaking a language similar to Welsh.

We don't know much about the original inhabitants of England. About 10,000 years ago the Celts and Picts invaded from Europe. They were the Ancient Britons who were colonsied by the Roman Empire.
About 1300 years ago, various Germanic tribes invaded England, although Scotland Wales and Ireland remained mostly Celtic and Pictish. Two of the tribes were the Angles (which is where the word England comes from) and the Saxons. English people generally like to think of themselves as Anglo Saxon. However, so many different peoples have invaded or settled in the British Isles that we're all a mixture of everybody.

English today are primarily a well stirred mix of Angle, Saxon, Celt & Norman - with a teeny bit of Roman thrown in for good measure.

Prior to the many foreign occupations Britain was subjected to, Celts were considered the original occupants.

The English are a mixed bunch!!!

First there were the Ancient Britons (they were a weird lot) Then along came the Romans, Saxons, Vikings etc.

All into the melting pot. So perhaps there is hope that one day there will be no racism???
