Living together is compromise no matter how compatible the people are. You have to explain to him that you share a space and that you are bothered by the junk. As I said, you have to compromise.

Enough civilized conversations and a willingness to work out problems can usually attribute to great relationships.

Its so funny that other "hoarders" responded with defensive answers! I have the EXACT same problem but my bf has his own place which is junked up to the high heavens with all manner of pure crap like you wouldn't believe!I have made some headway with him by getting him to at least organize the "stuff", but as soon as i let up a bit it starts to accumulate again! He is at least aware that he has a problem but so far, no real solution! If we eventually move in together I will really have to come up with some fresh ideas! Bribery and "rewards" may work, Ill have to see, Good luck and post me if you come up with a solution.

I myself keep broken parts and whatnot. I use them to fix and make stuff. You just need to set a limit on how much stuff he can have and where he can keep it. Be reasonable, half of your smallest closet isn’t going to be enough.

Let him have his stuff. He may have a deep psychological need to surround himself with things that have meaning to him.It may be a bit of insecurity.. If you take his collection away, he may find somebody who is more understanding.
