It is generally accepted that Lee Harvey Oswald shot President Kennedy. No one, however, was ever convicted of the crime.

My guess is hired gunmen killed Kennedy. Who hired the gunman? It was unknown members of the Military Industrial Complex that Eisenhower warned the American People about in his fare-well State of the Union.
Why would elements of the United States Military, Government, Corporations and ex-special operatives want to kill Kennedy. Because the Military Complex feared that Kennedy would de-escalate the War in Vietnam and remove the American Military Advisers.
The United States Military at that time, 1963, was absolutely sure that the North Vietnamese people and leadership would not be able to stand-up to our modern and will armed Military. (The War in Vietnam lasted until 1975. It started long before 1965, but that is the year it really got going)
We were just so wrong about the Vietnamese.
And the assassination of Kennedy and the Vietnam War cost the American People an even greater future. 60,000 Troops and over 150 Billion Dollars plus, were just thrown away.

JFK was killed by several snipers from the front and the rear of the motorcade in a major conspiracy. The fatal headshot came from the famous CIA ice bullet from the driver of the motorcade Secret Service Agent William Greer at the same instant a diversion shot was coming from the grassy knoll which exploded the President's brain jerking his head violently backwards. Check out the Zapruder film closely and you will see Greer doing something with his hands in the front seat, probably loading the 45 pistol turn around look at JFK and turn around again and firing the fatal shot. Greer and Kellerman the other agent then helped covering it all up at Parkland Hospital. Kennedy was also hit by a dart in the throat from the front and hit in the back from behind the motorcade. Lee Harvey Oswald probably knew that it was going to happen but was indeed a patsy in the conspiracy.

All evidence points toward a large conspiracy involving not a lone gunman, but key elements of our own government, media, and intelligence community.
They used shadowy criminal people from the mafia or cuban exile community to pull the trigger, though.
The planning of the operation, however, likely goes to Allen Dulles, Harry Halderman and some of the people involved in the Watergate scandal too.
This big conspiracy is actually key to many other big scandals that happened involving many of the same people.
One day the ugly truth will be known, but not until the players are all long dead.
