Been seeing my boyfriend for over a year now. My son has done well so far (he is the more experienced in this situation) They are both quiet...and a bit different. Son is a computer/academic sort and the boyfriend is the work hard/play hard/ cars/tools kind. Just trying to prevent problems. They have just started spending time together. I think that my boyfriend may try too hard at some point and then want to give up.

What can I say to prevent problems?

You do nothing.
They will find the answers themselves.
Time is the solution.

Try to find some common ground between them and do some activities they will both enjoy (like watching a game). They don't have to have everything in common but maybe can teach each other things.

The one thing I would add to the other answers it to remember your son was there first. He needs to know that you are there for him as well. He needs to feel you are looking out for his best interest and you are always there for him.

Now that does not mean you have to let him be in-charge any more that any other time but time and life is your best friend.

Try to find something they both like to do, maybe have them goto a baseball game or Amusement Park.
