Living abroad is a great opportunity that need to be considered carefully. Fear of loosing your friends should not stop you - because any friend lost for an absence of a year is not a friend worth keeping. They could even use the opportunity and visit you!
Before accepting an au-pair contract though, make sure you understand in full, and agree to, what it means. It is actual work - housecleaning and working with children, and it is at times harder that you can think. If the mom works out of the house, you may also feel alone, and miss your friends all that much more.
Make sure your situation will be legal! you need a work permit, and a legit health insurance - problems are fast to creep up, and you don't want to find yourself without a place to go, and sick.
E-mail and talk to your family several times, make sure you discuss all worries you have; keep in mind not only your point of view, but also the family's. Make sure you have a fall-back option - a friend close by, or a plan of what to do - or a credit card to charge a back-home ticket if something really should go bad (it can happen)
Ultimately, remember that this is an employment, not an alternative family or friends. Like in all life situations, you may end uup being great friends, but first the employment experience must be a good one.

Yes, if you have the opportunity, don't let it go away. First of all, not everyone can have this kind of opportunity. Like, why would you have this chance, why you, and if your finanical situation can afford that, everything adds up to the final conclusion that you can have this opportunity. Not sure how old are you now, but as time goes by, you would know at one point you can't do whatever you want. You're only leaving for a year or two, I'm sure you can catch up with friends later. TV shows don't really seem to be that important in one's life. But that one year overseas experience can definitely change you in many aspects. What I think you should worry probably is, whether you can have friends in that foreign country (only in this case you would miss your friends at home), and if you like that kind of lifestyle.
For me, I'm away from home. I was here for a few months few years ago and I thought I would like being where I'm. So I didn't think I wouldn't like here or miss home when I decided to come again. Now, honestly, I don't like it here. That doesn't seem to be the best result of all (as the best should be you like the place no matter where you're). However, I didn't regret. Because from this overseas experience, you can learn to treasure what you had (with temporarily away from you) at home, how to deal with new environment and people, and how to find out what you like. Most important, you learn another culture and people better. This is always good no matter for your everyday life or career.

If you have the opportunity to live abroad, take it. It will make you more independent and broaden your horizons, and you will discover there is more to life than worrying about missing TV shows...that is honestly the most shallow reason for not wanting to travel I have ever come across. Imagine if you don't go and your future kids will ask you why didn't you go...and you'll say you weren't gonna miss your favorite TV shows. Nuff said...switch of the TV and start packing. Bon voyage.

If you have an opportunity, take advantage of it. It may never come again. TV shows may be important to you now but over the years to come they will not be nearly as important or useful to you as the experience of traveling and studying abroad. Besides, if the shows you like are the really popular ones, they will be in syndication for years to come.

I have done it for short term projects (month), but if I could do it for a year in China, I would take it right away! TV shows are nothing, and you can always keep in touch with friends in other ways. Plus, it gives you a great chance to make new friends

Very few people get the opportunity to study abroad. It is something that if you get the chance to do, you should NOT pass up...
