They are Vegetarians. Tomatoes are a favorite. Lettuce and Squash. Just try a variety. When you eat Green Beans/Mashed Potatoes give the Turtle some and see if it like those. Keep Fresh water that easy to get, this is a land turtle. NOW, as for age, this an old school way I was told and really not sure it true. Count the Squares around the edge of the Shell or inside, not remember, this how many years old it is, but, I really not sure this true. May be a joke old people tell kids. Sort of like Snipe hunting.

MY turtles love eating soft fresh fruit and lounging in the shade and in cool spots of water. Try strawberries, peaches, bananas, lettuce, and tomatoes. If you would like, mealworms also serve as a treat to some. I honestly do not know how to tell the age, but i would suggest calling a wildlife agency to ask. They will be glad to help.

IT is illegal and irresponsible of you to remove animals from the wild and try to keep them as pets. Often you end up killing them. These guys are ENDANGERED animals in some areas. Way to contribute to their extinction be not allowing them to reproduce.

Plus turtles are ominovores and tortoises are vegetarians. I don't know what they other person is telling you, but if he doesn't know that, then I'm guessing the advice isn't too sound.
