I am pretty sure that if youlook closely enough you will find and asterisk (*) that explains that answering personally identifying answers are voluntary.. some are allowed to ask questions like this lawfully if something particular would interfere with either your or the companies ability to meet certain guide lines.. why would a company hire a 90 year old to run carnival rides.. or work in a factory where they have to toss around bags of cement all day?
It is discrimination and totally illegal if answering such questions is a mandatory requirement to being considered for the job.. speak with the local chapter on discrimination and staple a flyer to your applications.. they should take the hint.. or maybe perceive you as a troublemaker.. so be it.. why would you want to work for a company of reversed racists anyways? There's no future in a place that doesn't accept you for who you are and the accomplishments you possess in work history or advanced education. Someone will appreciate your efforts.. keep searching :)

I'm pretty sure they need DOB for background checks. That would occur before they hire you. As for race - I'm not even touching that one. Although it might be the same reason as I already mentioned.
Have a pleasant day.

I have not seen those Qs on job applications in the US forever. Tell them that it is illegal. They can ask, after they hire you, for whatever statistics they want or insurance they offer, but not before they hire you.

Because discrimination is illegal, the statistics are needed to prove that there is no discrimination.
Kind of a Catch-22 isn't it.

THERE IS NO REASON TO ASK THAT INFORMATION ON AN APPLICATION IN FACT IN CALIFORNIA IT IS ILLEGAL FOR IT TO BE ASK ON AN APPLICATION. I COME FROM A MULTI ETHNIC FAMILY, WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE 15 YEARS AGO I WOULD JUST CHECK EVERYTHING AND LET THEM FIGURE IT OUT LATTER. DISCRIMINATION IS HORRIBLE NO MATTER WHAT RACE YOU ARE.

They say that the reason they ask for race is for census purposes, but I sometimes wonder.
