Under normal chemical nomenclature the -ite suffix would denote a compound (e.g. the compound uranite contains the element uranium). Thus the name implies that kryptonite is a compound and not an element .
Krypton was the name of Superman's original home planet.
Krypton (Greek κρυπτός meaning "hidden")
Krypto-nite would thus mean a chemical compound from Krypton or in a strict sense "hidden-compund"

Kryptonite is a part of the planet Krypton which exploded shortly after the baby who became Clark Kent was launched into space headed for earth. It weakens Superman, making him more like a Terran. Most kryptonite is green, but there is also a stronger form which is colored red. Basically, kryptonite is a meteor that originated with the destruction of Krypton.

kryptonite is from superman...
he was from the planet Krypton, which blew up. because he gets his energy from "our" yellow sun, being near kryptonite (a chunk of rock from the exploded planet) weakens him into a normal state of being.
it's become pop culture to refer to things as Kryptonite, meaning it's your weakness.

kryptonite is the mythical substance which is toxic to Superman, depending on whether it is red, green or gold, it can, within the mythology, make Superman a little dizzy, temporarily to permanently nullify his powers, kill him.
