Spam.

Stuff you post merely for posting sake. Filling without content. "Empty calories" so to speak.

It is from this sketch by Monthy Python the name for this 'cultural abomination' has spawned;

Technically, SPAM is Unsolicited Mail - in other words, email from people you don't know and didn't ask to receive.

It isn't (as far as I know) an acronym (except that people have made it so since) - spam is a trade name for a tinned meat which (during the war) had a reputation for being of dubious origin but was often the only meat available. Monty Python's Flying Circus made a joke about it and it became 'the meat nobody would want to eat if they could help it'. As a meat, it's still available and, well, edible, lol!

You need to know first what it is and how your email can filter it (Yahoo does this very well) but much more important is how to avoid getting it,

Unsolicited or undesired bulk electronic messages, such as:

* e-mail spam, unsolicited emails with advertisements
* spamdexing, manipulating a search engine to create the illusion of more popularity of a webpage of lesser importance
* Messaging spam — instant messenger spam
* Forum spam — Pointless topics, advertisements

It's from the Monty Python sketch in the cafe where everything on the menu is Spam - means unsolicited mail or pointless messages on a forum, usually used to just 'up' the poster's post count.

Spam is not an acronym. Spam is a term that's used to identify unsolicited e-mail, usually advertising.

The term comes from an old Monty Python movie.

Spam is unecessary email that many companies send. You say you're new to this? You'll know soon enough. Just mark such messages as 'Spam', and never ever send a reply. And never click a link from suspicious senders saying 'Remove me from mailing list'.

I know you mean the junkmail kind, but just incase you were interested -SPAM as in the meat, actually stands for 'Specially Produced American Meat' and came out in the second world war as a meat substitute.

SPAM is unsolicited e-mail, usually advertisements. Be careful before you open any unexpected e-mail from people you don't know, it may contain a virus. If you get some its best to just delete it without opening.

Wow, I thought everyone knew! Spam is the lovely stuff that turns up as junk-mail in your e-mail inbox. Just as finance companies, ever keen to re-finance you, cut down trees to send you leaflets, so they jam your mailbox online. Also expect many offers of viagra, sex websites, college scholarships to American universities, etc.

Unwanted, unsolicited bulk mail sent to thousands or millions of email accounts at once. Most often seen as emails selling sexual enhancers or other medecines available only through presecription. But you will see many that are also for at home businesses, travel, and just about any other thing you can sell.
