People needed to divide the day into intervals so that they could record when things happened, set times when things were going to happen, and all of the various other things that people use time for.

As for how it was divided the way it was, people used to use a duodecimal counting system, counting to twelve before adding a new place. Aside from the widespread use of 12 hour systems of time, there's the fact that basically every language has a special word for 11 and 12, and then reverts to root + teen or decimal + number.

Also, people seem to have begun by dividing the day into 12 hours with no divisions for night, because it was impossible to keep track of without some sort of semi-advanced device.

To quote an old, overused (but true) adage, "Time is an illusion that keeps everything from happening at once." That is to say that it's all in our minds.

On a lighter note, "they" DO use 24 in many places, even here. It's otherwise known as military time, and once you get used to it, it's not too bad. Many people in other places don't even know what AM and PM mean. Using 24 prevents confusion if neither AM or PM is used.

When the Earth began to spin on its axis, time started. Sometime in time after that time, someone divided a sundial somewhere and it just came out 12. It might have been 4. Or 60. (???)

some countrys do use 24 instead of 12, and of course army time, but think time started when we start careing about it, at first it was a matter of light, ok the suns up now we can track a buffalo, opps its gone down time to set up camp, but now we have lights and things like that, so we wouldnt care about those thing right?

The US is the only place lazy enough to use a 12 hour clock in schools, train stations, airports, and for everyday stuff other than military. So, blame it on some crazy American.
