Today in the United States sheep are sheared for two reasons: to keep them cool and keep them clean. Massive amounts of wool and mostly the dirt and buildup on the wool can cause the sheep to become very warm and overheated. Also, the dirt and debris, and oils(lanolin) that collect in the wool accumulate over time and if let unsheared could cause skin problems for the sheep.

There hardly any profit in shearing sheep in the U.S. today. You are lucky if you break even when shearing your sheep if you sell the wool. Other countries such as Australia, China, and New Zealand have cornered the market for wool. Australia produces 25% of the world's wool today with the U.S. producing .77%.

Shearing is generally carried out in the spring, so sheep don't become overheated in the summer.

A long fleece is likely to become dirty and drag along the ground, increasing the possibility of flystrike.

A bulky fleece decreases the mobility of sheep.

In HOT weather, sheep with too much wool are extremely susceptible to heat stress!!

Shearing keeps stained wool and mud-contaminated wool separate from new fleece growth.

The main reason they shear them is to get the wool to sell to market to make a living. Do you think your clothes just appear?

Past that a sheep might be sheared due to a heavy coat and fact that it is summer, allow the sheep to be more comfortable.

First of all, the other person, embigguns: real funny, that's where syphilis came from.

Shearing sheep: That's where wool comes from. Wool is used to make textiles such as sweaters, suits, pants, skirts, blankets, and others.

For the sheep. It gets so hot in wool. Would you were a wool coat in the middle of summer I think not! To keep the clean and bug free that can latch on to the wool. Not to mention all the sweaters people ware.

The wool that you sear from a sheep keeps warm when you wear it!

Sheep don't shed so they have to be shaved to get rid of their winter coat. Also, farmers breed them to sell the wool for income. If they are not shaved, they can't get the wool to sell it.

to keep them cool in summer, it also helps to keep them clean so they don't get fly strike and on top of that if you dipped them with a full fleece it wouldn't get to the skin, and ! extra money from selling the wool. hope this helps bit!?
