Hi, cookiemonsta - I have some sugar cookies baking right now! Send a copy of your poem to yourself PREDATING your sending it to the contest. When the envelope arrives (don't open it), it will have a postmark that is before your entry to the contest. Best of luck!

p.s. I received something from "Poets Prize" ; I don't know if it's legit, but you might check out www.hipdream.com for their contest.

Legitimate poetry contests are excellent places to get published and find recognition. You don't have to worry about legit places stealing your poetry either.

The trick is to find contests that actually ARE legit. Just try an Internet search of "poetry contest scams" to find out how many of them aren't.

Take a look at the rules before you enter anything. Who is judging the contest? What are their credentials? Is there an initial screening process or does the head judge look over all the poems? If there is an entry fee, how is it being used? Do all entrants receive something like a subscription to a literary journal in exchange for their entry fee? Is a winner guaranteed to be chosen or will the judge only award a prize if he or she finds a very special poem? If a winner isn't guaranteed, what happens to the entry fees?

Just do your research and avoid the scammers.

You can have it copyrighted as an original piece of work but it is understood as copyrighted by the author the minute it is created there is no "poor man's " copyright so having it notarized is a way of documenting the origination date but most contests don't take over ownership of the rights. There is alot of information about this on the US Government copyright website .

I've sent poems into contect before never had any problem. You could regester your poem with the writers guide of america and that would protect it. But I wouldn't worry about any one stealing your peom.

yeah, enter it, you could win, but if you dont want anyone to steal it, hide it till the contest, or only show it to the people you really trust

I don't know what this line "And the creatures kept building through the sky to have a fob" means.
