It's easy to 'assume' that everyone who receives assistance is just lazy and that no one suffers from any circumstances that requires our society to help them. It is the perfect perception and makes it a lot easier on the rest of us to feel good about ourselves.
But in fact, bad things do happen to good people sometimes and there are those who are neither lazy or trying to steal your pennies who do need some assistance.
But then again, are you your brother's keeper?
Probably not.

Welfare in and of itself should not be completely abolished. However, the mindset that living on welfare is an acceptable lifestyle choice should be, and the reforms passed in '96 have gone a long way toward that end.
In a pure capitalist society, people and businesses all have their ups and downs, but when a family has a bad break, they can be left in dire straits. Welfare was introduced as a social safety net, to help those who hit a bad patch in their lives to get back on their feet. This is what it was meant to be, and what it should remain. The problems only started when the liberals of the '60s began to see it as an acceptable lifestyle choice, and basically paid people (especially young women) to have kids and not work, assuming the role of the father. This went a long way toward creating the entitlement mentality that plagues America today.

No, as there are some legitimate people who need it (like the woman with kids who has had the lowlife father skip out on them, so can't very well go get a job right away). Of course better steps need to be made to round up the cheats and put them to work. Personally I think setting up civic cleaning teams (sweeping streets and picking up garbage in parks) isn't unreasonable. Perhaps the government needs to do a better job setting some of these people up with appropriate jobs to at least get a service back for the money.
The problem isn't welfare; it is how the system is mismanaged.

No, but it needs some SERIOUS reforming. The current welfare program is only set up to help people not work and better themselves. I mean, a hard working person that barely makes enough to survive and can't provide very well for their children can't get any type of assistance from the government, however, someone who just want's to lay on their back and spread their legs... keep popping out more kids and then doesn't want to support them... they can get all kinds of money.

i think welfare shouldn't be abolished but i think it needs more restrictions put into play. too many people abuse it and that's not what it was intended for. i also feel the same about disability too. i won't even go into my feelings on social security and people never working a day in theirs lives receiving a check of the money that i have worked to put into it, that as they say, won't be there when i get old enough to draw off of it.

Well Clinton did an awesome job cutting back welfare benefits. It should remain as a safety net, very similar to Social Security. But the system as it stands today, is heavily flawed.

YES! Maybe if we make these people go to their families for help there might be some pier pressure for them to get off thier lazy butts and get a job and quit having baby's that they can't afford. If their families won't help maybe we should make little tent cities & quit making their life so comfortable while on welfare. Feed them 3 meals a day, have a community shower and make them wash their clothes with the old washboards. Not make it quite so fun or nice for them to be on welfare. I'm sorry but I'm so tired of people on welfare living better than I do and I'm the one thats paying for them to live like that!!!

No, I don't think it should be abolished because some people really need it. But I agree, they all need to go out & get jobs. I get tired of supporting them.

No, some people really do need help, think about the elderly who can't afford real medical help, if it weren't for them we wouldn't be here, think about the older veterans who fought for us, who is now living on the streets, think about people who were born unable to work, there are some people out there who is abusing the system, but we still need it.
