Because if you slept with your eyes opened you would freak People out, They would think you were dead ... Scary !

Not all mammals close eyes when asleep-you can just as easily blink asleep as awake, since its subconcious anyway. It is also not due to distractions in your field of vision waking you, since background auditory and visual signals are filtered out while asleep. So, theoretically, and in some people and quite a few other species, one can sleep with the eyes open. The only logical explanation is likely that it protect the eyes from damage due to insects, blowing dust, etc. Since you are not using your eyes whiel asleep, there is no reason to expose them to possible damage.
