When I read some of the answers to questions, especially on military matters, racism and religion, I become more and more convinced that at a very large number of people are truly insane. Yet these people hold down responsible jobs, serve in military forces, marry, elect congressmen and presidents etc. Is it any wonder the world is in such a mess?

We have reached the point in this country where we think that those who do not agree with us are insane. Many people have their pet notions and cling to them despite evidence to the contrary. In fact they shun and certainly do not seek any evidence that may disturb their well entrenched views. We see this on television, where bias (and laziness) has virtually destroyed the media as effective sources of useful material. Please don't make the mistake of thinking someone with a contrary idea is insane, but by reason and thoughtful (informed) argument, seek to change their mind. The problem is, that too many minds are closed.

Even though I suggest reasonableness, I too am guilty of a bias against George W. Bush. He certainly has not shown himself to be the least bit competent, has ruined for the USA what little world-wide good will remained before he came to power, and has made decisions leading to the deaths of many thousands.

While it is true that 9/11 was a tragic loss of life that led to a war, every day, in these United Sates, more than 1000 people die from smoking related disease caused by products produced in the USA. You don't see the heads of these corporations as Bin Ladens, they are captains of industry and campaign contributers. In my view their factories should be emptied of people and carpet bombed. It may sound insane to you, but it certainly makes more sense than having our precious family members killed so that the US military industrial complex can have an excuse to sell replacement weapons to our government instead of say providing health insurance.

Don't think of them as outside the asylum; they're just biding their time. When there's enough space, they will have a room booked!
It's amazing, isn't it? You read some of the comments and answers on this site, and it blows the mind. Aside from the complete lack of spelling, grammar, or punctuation- I gather a high school diploma no longer guarantees a proficiency in language!- the content of the comments and answers are startling.

Insanity is a psychiatric definition and insane people have a level of disordered thinking and behavior considered so deviant it defies understanding . Insanity is treated with drugs.
Just because people have a different way of thinking, a point of view different from yours does not put them inot the insane category even if it is difficult or impossible to understand them. Our lack of understanding may be a facet of our own disordered thought processes.

I wouldn't be suprised, and I do agree.
I really hate to say it, but I have no damn clue why the world is such a mess.
Stupidity is how about 90% of the people in the world revolve, its totaly sad, but at the same time totaly true.

First you have to define insane, madness is socially created so I'm not sure that the point you are making is the right one.

I think the more worrying thing is that these people are insane, that these are really their views, and that is how they live their life.

Hating and prejudice aren't a mental illness.

Agreed, but as long as the majority are insane, the few that use common sense and judgement are considered insane.

No wonders at all. I only discovered Yahoo! Answers yesterday, and today I feel more disillusioned than I could have ever thought possible. Although, my ability to forgive his grown more in those twenty-four hours than I believe it has at any time in my life. We really have some work to do.
