So that the eyes are protected and also so that they do not dry out - the same reason we blink. Most people do sleep with their eyes closed - but I personally know two people who sleep with eyes wide open part of the time during their sleep cycle, and it is very eerie to see if you are not aware that they do. One of them was a brother of my friend, and we freaked out a few of our friends by creeping into his room with a flashlight (he had a room in the basement and kept a shade over the tiny window so it was very dark) and then shining it onto his face. Boy did they get a fright! Also, people who sleepwalk (my brother) have their eyes open during that time period, even though they do not see out but rather envision within a scenario in which they are instead walking. You can stand in front of them, wave a hand, whatever, and they will most likely not react as you and the surroundings are non-existent to them.

Well, if you sleep with your eyes open, you won't rest your eyes. When you sleep you rest yourself. So, if you sleep with your eyes closed, you will feel good after your sleep.

You don't. I had a grandfather who was a member of the armed forces in Laos and he was trained to sleep with his eyes open (to always be, or appear to be, alert). (It used to freak my mom out when she tried to sneak out of the house at night).
