Why do I have to be awake with my eyes open?

2006-06-25 05:21:07 · answer #1 · answered by upagnstthewall 2 · 1 0

If you sleep with your eyes open, your eyes would dry out. You need to be blinking to keep your eye lubricated with tears, which you wont do when asleep. Also to avoid foreign objects from falling into your eyes.
The other reason would be that external stimuli would continue to be processed by our eye and that would interfere with our sleep. So you need to close your eyes when you sleep.
I have heard that some people sleep with their eyes open. I wonder if they blink while they do so. I think those people are more day dreaming than doing real sleep.
