If he's a trainer there, then strike up a conversation with him regarding different workout routines. Then ask him if he would like to go out for a smoothie sometime to talk over more workout stuff (wink wink) and if he does great when you're out and about you can talk about other stuff and get a feel for him.
If he says no, for whatever reason - I don't go out with people from the gym, I have a girlfriend etc... - say "well - we don't need to go out - If you can just set aside some time to show me some more techniques I'd really appreciate it."
That way - you make it seem that the only reason you asked him out was to talk about your workout and you save face.

well, i would start off by asking him about some different ways of working out. and ask him out for a cup of coffee or something in that nature. and then see how it goes from there. he might tell you that he is in a relationship with someone. and it's serious. if so move on like nothing happened. you can still be friends and work out in the same gym with no hard feelings. as long as your not a stalker.

Well, you could not ask him and then you never have to worry about being rejected.
But getting over rejection is a huge step in life. You should atleast introduce yourself and talk with him. Guys love girls with guts.
Just go up to him, introduce yourself and talk with him, small talk and stuff. Then if you feel comfortable ask him for coffee/dinner/somethin. It is really simple and you will love yourself for getting over the fear.
The worst thing that could happen is you introduce yourself and hes not interested and its really just fine, its definately no biggy.
P.S. Make sure hes not busy like doing a 400lb press.

Had you thought of asking him for help with an exercise? Or a spot? If he does, you can introduce yourself and learn his name. That's a beginning.
If he runs, you may want to grab the treadmill next to him - and introduce yourself that way!

Ask him to show you how to work a certain machine, and when he does ask him if he will work out with you on it so you can learn. He will start talking, and you can always ask him if you can take him to a movie that your to afraid to see by yourself.

when ya work out with him...try givin him subtle lil flashes of yer goodies...accidentally of course...be sly about it...eventually you'll knob his attention and then you can decide how far ya wanna get with him instead of how far you dream of getting with him
