I understand you! It's a really difficult job to choose one. Let me clarify some points for you:
iPod is the best JUST BECAUSE IT IS AN iPOD! It has no accessories on(voice recorder, radio, and CHARGER), you have to buy all these separately. It has got a built-in Lithium battery that will end one day & you can't change it yourself, the factory will do it for you & again you have to pay money for that. BUT STILL IT'S AN iPOD & loads of people pay $s for having AN iPOD!
If you want a 512 MB, I recommend you not to buy an iPod shuffle(the only iPod with 512 MB) cause it doesn't have any screen & only shuffle.
I think Creative(don't remember the model) is a good choice, it uses only one AAA battery + it has a built-in microphone for voice recording + FM radio & the quality is also good; Z-Cyber (from Zoltrix) can be another choise. But don't but any of these rubbish chinese ones, they are really rubbish, althought they really look so nice.

Well it all depends if you are looking for a brand new one, a used one, or a refurbished one.
Check out stores like ebay or Amazon for a bargin.
I personaly do not like iPods, so here is my recomandations:
If you want a player that just plays music i would recomend an iRiver H10 (comes in 5gb, 6gb, or 20gb). I had one that i bought at Amazon for just over 200 bucks that I loved till the second that someone else decided that they liked it enought to steal it away from me at school. (Curse them!!!)
If it had'nt been stolen from me i am sure that i would still be using it to this day.
I am now looking for a Creative Zen Vision:M to replace it. Brand new from creative it is $300 but i have found it cheaper on ebay and amazon. This is a 30gb player that also plays movies.
And of course you could jump on the iPod bandwagon. I am choosing not to because it ONLY works with iTunes where i want whatever i get to work also with WMP 10.
If your route is the same as mine (using windows media player), i recomend going to Playsforsure.com. Here you can do the best search on the internet (in my opinion) for MP3 players that are Plays for sure compatible. You can select the size (memory and phisical), color, what you want inside your mp3 player and plenty of other things tat i cant even list. This is how i found both of my mp3 players that i have either bought or am currently buying.
So as you can see,
it really depends on what you are really looking for, how much space, and the condition of the player.
:)

considering that my grandma has an ipod.. yeah
but go against the trend, get a RIO or iriver or some other brand. I have seen a few other people with mp3 plyers a bit bulkier than the ipod, but just as functional. There are many brands to choose from. Like Dells jukebox etc

Aigo is a cheap and cheerful brand, nice black rubberised case and decent sound quality. If its cheap and it gets nicked it won't be too much hassle. They do a 512mb and a 1 gig at Argos for about £40. The headphones are ok too, and the battery life on 1 AAA rechargeable Nimh is a decent 8 hours.

if you only want 512mb, i would recommend something like the ipod shuffle. I don't know how much space it has but i think it is not far from512mb. If you want something where you can fit a lot more songs get an ipod nano. They have different versions of this ipod for different prices.

I've got an IRiver and Creative Zen. Both are great. The Creative is a little touch sensitive.

try the iriver t30, as ipods are for people without an imagination.
