I'm Canadian. Under no circumstances would I call myself American.

And the name "Europe" is becoming synonymous with the European Union, and so for example including Ireland and excluding Switzerland. (Although it's true that the Swiss would be more likely to call themselves "Europeans" than the Irish would.)

And while you're at it, I know a fair number of US citizens (some who have no other citizenship) who were NOT born in the USA.

I agree with your thoughts ... the Amerikas were discovered as a whole, then later divided into North America and South America. Many people are Asian, but there are borders and politics to consider there, too. You need a passport even in Europe to travel from country to country. It's not about the name of the continent; Russia and China are both in Asia - are these not vastly different cultures and languages?

Borders are more political than physical, and the structure of all borders between countries ( and states ) has vastly changed over the centuries. I have faith that they will change yet again over time ... I mean, what ever happened the Czechoslavakia?

Only in the US are you called "American". While technically anyone who is born in N. or S. America can be referred to as such, I think the complex name of "The United States of America" makes it easier for us to be called this....

The US is not the only country in Americas with "united states". Both Brazil, and Mexico also have "state" system. Which poses an interesting question......

There is a greater sense of unity in Europe than in the Americas, we have a much larger land mass, and our history does not go as far back. Also, in Europe, Many people speak different languages which bridges differences between nations. Hopefully, we Americans can get off our lazy ignorant asses and productively engage with our brothers from the south, as well as really get to know our Canadian brothers from the north, without patronizing them, thinking they are like us....When we do that, the Americas will be unified as well....

Just a thought....

Okay, that is true, but we usually say something like North American, or South American.

We can't call people from the United States of America "United Statsians" or something - that would sound retarded. So we have taken the term American, since we were the first American nation anyway (the rest of the colonies here were still considered to be part of France, England, and Spain).

Actually you can consider being an American if from the Western Hemispere- but divided up into 3 segments: North American, Central American, South American. During the Late 1800's and 1900's and then during WWI and WWII the term "American" used by many countries referred to people from the U.S.A.

incredibly some people do no longer understand merely how severe the opportunity of amnesty is. the theory that there is only approximately 10-12 million illegals right it rather is definitely BOGUS! The open borders crowd has been using that estimate for close to to a decade. A greater in all probability estimate is 25 million and a few estimates run as intense as 35-39 million. yet it rather is the place it gets exciting... maximum illegals listed here are adult men, with their households nonetheless residing of their interior of reach international locations, usually Mexico. ALL instant kin (different halves & infants - and individuals in lots of circumstances) would be coated in an Amnesty. So do any of you think of those are small households? think of returned! those are great households – loads of infants! merely use 25 million as a commencing determine for those already right here and upload their households nonetheless residing of their interior of reach international locations. Do the mathematics! what is going to the appropriate tally be for Amnesty? eighty million? greater? returned, DO the mathematics!!! they'll come right here like a huge tsunami and wages would be pushed in the process the floor. hundreds of thousands of them bankrupt our welfare equipment, our well being care equipment and our faculties. you will artwork until your butts fall off and count style yourselves fortunate in case you have sufficient funds to feed beans & bread to your guy or woman households. the middle type will advance into extinct especially much in one day. yet Obama and his socialist minions do no longer supply a rat's *** approximately you. they want all those hundreds of thousands of latest electorate so they are in a position to comprehend their ambition of one party Marxist rule and those new electorate WILL vote for them to get each and all the unfastened candies the Marxists would be promising them. I even have lived in Mexico and that i will inform you that purely some people rather comprehend the myriad different dramatic social ills those immigrants will carry into this u . s . a .. Amnesty may be a social and financial catastrophe of epic proportions. it rather is the easy replace Obama has been promising. And please, spare me the “kin values don’t stop on the Rio Grande” poop. temporarily, if Amnesty is handed, you may kiss usa adios!!!

it is possible to be anything you choose. people in the USA call themselves Americans because United Statesion sounds ridiculous. No one is trying to take over the title or suggest that they are the only group that matters in North America.
