Like so short they can't even tie it back or do anything to it. How can they get the courage to cut off all their hair?

I'm a stylist, and I find that many women prefer shorter hair for a few reasons:
It's easier to take care of.
Finer hair looks thicker and fuller when it is shorter.
Shorter hair is lighter and may have more body.
Clients with short hair who are set and styled weekly can keep their style for a week. (with lots of spray..lol)

I think that there is a short style for everyone, but you need to take your face shape and hair texture into consideration before choosing a style.
It does take some time for short short hair to grow back to long, but while it is growing back you get to enjoy various styles as it changes while growing. A good stylist can assist you with tips on how to work with your hair while it is growing in.
I'm a short hair girl at heart....so I think everyone should try it at least once. Consider going shorter in stages if you are unsure if you want to go all the way. A little at a time works better for some people as opposed to a drastic change.
Happy styling!

Fine/thin hair does often look better when it is shorter, and long hair tends to drag down features (not great when you're already dealing with the effects of gravity!). But I think there's also a cultural component to this. The belief that women over a certain age (30, 35, maybe 40) have no business having long hair is not uncommon in the West. I think many people see it in the same way as women of that age wearing clothing styles that are for women who are much younger.

Shorter hair is conveniently maintained. i trust at the same time as you get a delegated age, the finished & thickness of your hair become worse, quick hair hides this disorder to an quantity. Plus a lot extra older women persons positioned on wigs than you've self assurance. And Shorter are a lot less complicated in that section too.

I'm not old I'm 40 but I've been wearing my hair short since I was 18. The reasons I have are that I'm not vain, don't like to stand in front of the mirror for hours, I'm active and would rather spend time doing other things than fussing in front of a mirror, my hair is dry in 10 minutes and I'm ready to go. It's a personal choice for me, had to wear my hair long for years for my parents and it was terribly fine to the point of knotting up after I combed it so I said to hell with it and have kept it short ever since.

A woman in her forties can visually, take years off her age by going to a shorter hair cut. It is also more managable because grey hair is coarser. The courage to do this comes from wisdom in knowing the good things that come from it.

Ever hear of a thing called Arthritis: A lot of elderly women have arthritis, and just trying to keep their hair out of their faces can be very painful for them. So they prefer a hair style that is a lot easier to take care of. I am 56,and my hair is not that short, but who knows how I will feel in about 20 years, when I am my mothers age.

Sometimes women (or men for that matter) grow their hair long enough to be donated to locks of love or they could have had their hair fried by a bad hair style or bleaching or coloring. Or it could just be a personal preferance to have shorter hair, there isn't much involved in it. I get my hair cut short every few years just for a change, now I am back to trying to let it grow in longer.

There is no hidden message behind the short hair other than it's eaisier to take care of. Who want's to spend hours everyday in front of a mirror messing with hair. There is more to life worrying about how your hair likes. No I am not old and I have very thick hair. Its long enough to put in a ponytail and short enough to be convientient. My grandmother puts her short hair in pincurls.

I'm currently living in Germany and here lots of older women have short hair. I think that it's a way of self expression, since sometimes after working a lot of their life, a person can begin to feel stiffled.

Well for one, as you get older, it takes longer for your hair to grow. This may have something to do with it. Secondly, by this time MOST women are no longer trying to find a man or impress them, so they have hairstyles that they like or feel comfortable with, and that they can manage, instead of what their man would like. I find most younger women have longer hair because their boyfriend or husband doesn't want them to cut it short.
