when you ask them? I mean, why not just give some ideas so you get what you like? Unless you really don't want anything...

Q, are you saying that if someone asks you what they want and they give you an idea, that makes you materialistic? Should everyone always say nothing then? I was just wishing my husband gave me an idea!!

This is actually a very good question. At first I was going to answer simply, "'Cause they really don't want anything for their birthday." However, after reading the rest of your question I quite agree with you that they should give some kind of idea of what they'd like.... UNLESS, of course, they really don't want anything.

For example, both my parents PREFER we are all together on their birthdays. The gift is in the gathering. Tangible gifts mean little to them at their age. How many more ties can my Dad have? He doesn't even WEAR ties anymore. Of course, perfume for Mom doesn't really go out of style but frankly she'd much rather be treated to a nice lunch or supper, or show (theatre).

Now, from the point of view of the person whose birthday is approaching, being asked what they want may put them in an uncomfortable position. What should they say? A DVD? A cd? A pony? How specific should they be?

Perhaps if you can discern their favorite store, a gift card from that store would be quite nice. Present it in a homemade card. Craft something, perhaps, if you have that kind of talent.

Personally, I'd rather not have a physical gift. It's just one more "thing" I have to find space for and I recently got rid of a lot of stuff to create more space. I prefer to keep it simple: buy me ribs and a couple of ice cold beers. Light a candle placed at the top of a German Chocolate cake, sing to me, join me for that cake (with coffee), then let me nap.

Oh honey, this guy may be a Jehovah Witness. if so, run - run - run. He might additionally be a great time loser. How damned confusing is it to get you a single pink rose or a container of candy? i will actually say, he's in all probability looking forward to something from you. My 2nd ex husband neglected my b-day 3 years in a row because of the fact he mandatory what little funds we had on the time for his friends and brother's b-day. I even reminded him that if we spent the money on his buds, then there does not be any funds left for my b-day. He merely did no longer care. He advance into too busy being the 'huge guy'. He additionally envisioned me to p.c.. out the presents for those adult men. consequently, between the numerous motives I left. yet, I digress... in case you adult men are merely relationship, think of how issues may be in case you ever have been given married. i will promise you it merely isn't especially. you need to confirm in case you may rather spend the the remainder of your existence without ever getting those remembrances, because of the fact issues will purely worsen. stable success honey.

I never want anything for my b-day but love from my kids and husband. If I ask for anything it is usually their time. I never like receiving gifts any time of the year. It's just how I feel. I give gifts a lot all year round. Not on special occasions but when I feel moved to do so.

When I say I don't want anything I truly mean it. If I need or want anything I'de rather just get it myself. This way I know I'm getting exactly what I want. Although if any of my family offered to take my children for the night that would be awsome.

Maybe they don't really want anything. I know that when my kids ask me, it's really hard to give them gift ideas, because I really don't need/want anything.
The last time I gave a suggestion, it was for a spatula (which I really did need!). They laughed at me! That was the last suggestion I made.

Probably because they don't want you spending money on them. If your finances are tight, can you do something for them? Wash the car, watch the baby, bake some cookies, do the laundry etc. They cost you little or no money, but show that you care and want to do something nice.

Some people may want something that they know that you might not be able to afford to get them.

Some may not want anything because either they have everything

Some may want you to come up with something and they will like it anyway because "It's The Heart That Counts."

Many people dislike that some people feel like they "have to" give you a gift on your birthday... which then requires that you"have to" give them something on their birthdays and that further requires you remembering their birthdays... We do care we just prefer to give gifts whenever the feeling moves us ... people need to quit trying to force their beliefs on others learn to live and let live and simply honor the beliefs of others even when they differ from your own. ~ Rudy
