They get more people to use Yahoo search to research the answers. The more people that use the search; the more money Yahoo will make.

Yahoo! wants to draw more users into its site so they can make money off of search ads, other paid ads and services or products that they provide.
Yahoo! Answers gets people addicted and makes some more loyal to or more comfortable with Yahoo! services. The added content also means that when people search for something on another search engine, they'll often get a result that brings them to Yahoo! Answers so Yahoo! can take over the rest of the search.
