I haven't a clue what "new age anorexia" is but I'm going to make some guesses.

Anorexia is a mental illness where a person starves themselves to death in the mistaken belief they are too fat when they are actually thin to the point where they can and do kill themselves.

The new age has developed a fascination with near death experiences and some sources have described this as a form of mental anorexia.

So I'm guessing this is someone's new term for deliberately trying for a near death experience. Since this can be viewed as another delusional mental illness where you can and will kill yourself.

New Age Anorexia is actually not anorexia at all. It is cutting oneself. they call it new age anorexia because it usually occurs during adolescence which is also a period of vulnerability for anorexia. Additionally, the teens are cutting themselves as release of tension from their life stressors. Teens usually cut to localize the pain. the pain of the cut is visible and can heal versus the overwhelming pain of lifetime stress which they may not know how to cope with.

New Age Anorexia--it is a new generation term used/called for, "self-abuse". also called: self mutilation, the practice of cutting, burning or otherwise injuring one's own body (self-direct abuse). It is often seen as a warning of suicide or as a method for seeking attention. They say teenaged girls who practice self mutilation view it as their secret, often a sacred one.

There are several forms of self-mutilation. And cutting appears to be the most common. The cutter uses a razor blade, knife or other sharp object to puncture the skin, often allowing it to bleed for several minutes. Burning, the practice of resting a lit cigarette, lighter, match or heated metal against the skin is also well documented among teens who self mutilate.
