He is one of the top goal keepers. He had one of the longest streaks for clean sheets in international mateches going coming into the World Cup. The Netherlands has pretty good defenders, but its midfield does not transition well from offence to defense (and visa versa) and that makes what Edwin van der Sar does all that much more impressive. He is one of the few goalkeeper and captians of his team in the World Cup (usually goes to an on the field player).
He is quite agile for his height and made one of the most impressive stops in all of the World Cup with a kick save in the ugly Portugal match. On a few occasions his defenders and midfielders were out of the picture and it was he alone with the opponent and he came out on top. His shot to goal ratio is very good and the opposing strikers do not like facing him as his size, range, and reflexes make out witting him rather difficult.
The rumor is he will be retiring from Dutch international play no that their World Cup quest is over, as he would be 40 by the time the next WC rolls around.

Edwin van der Sar is a fantastic goalkeeper. At the age of 36, he's still going strong proving that you can still have a career in football well after you're the age of 30! He's great technically, he stands tall and commands his penalty box with authority and communicates well with his backline. He's an amazing goalkeeper who shines for United and will do wonders for Holland in this year's World Cup.
In six years, Man Utd have tried Bosnich, Taibi, Barthez, Carroll and Tim Howard, all of them were good goalkeepers but made a lot mistakes, there was no stability in the back. When they signed van der Sar they finally got the stability they needed, and he is a magnificent goalkeeper. He is old, so he isn't gonna last forever, but that will give them more time to find his successor.
But he still has lots of room. Edwin's been a fantastic buy. His consistency is the best factor, you always know what you'll get from him, unlike other talented keepers like Barthez and Howard whose eccentricity hardly inspires confidence in the back line. Ed's a vocal keeper whose experience surpasses his entire back line, so he always commands them well. The only thing wrong with his signing was it didn't happen in September '99.

I have always been a great fan of Van der sar and think him him to be one of the keepers of the tournament. Any other goal keeper in his place would have conceded a few more goals in the tournament, especially given the kind of opposition the Netherlands have faced. He is a gifted goalkeeper and makes a huge difference to both club and country. In fact he is a vital reason why Manchester United finished second in the EPL.

I think he holds the most amazing shots! He has a great ability to see where the ball is going. He doesn't let too many balls through, and without him, the Dutch team, wouldn't be as good.. That's also why he is the captain of the team, though he is in the goal!!
Great job Edwin van der Sar!

Being a United fan i certainly think he's a good keeper, but here especially in this world cup i think he has shined. He has his moments of doubts in the premiership, but has been really solid in between the sticks this year. Unfortuneately, he hasn't had the offensive firepower toback his skills and had an unlucky break against Portugal( he was shielded by his own player on the shot and his reaction was late, also a well placed shot by maniche) but he was only scored on twice in this world cup which i think is a well done performance being who he faced in argentina, ivory coast, and portugal.
