Contact the Better Business Bureau in your area. They should have information on the contractor.

Usually the Better Business Bureau has info on most contractors. And lawsuit info might be a matter of public record, depending on the State. Whatever State you live in, there should be a State Code (e.g. Ohio is O.R.C.) that you can research online.
