For years (the better part of her life) my wife has managed to bury her depression with excessive exercise, cleaning, calorie couting . . . compulsive behaviors that would seem to give her a sense of control in her life.

After talking to her brother (what was on Paxil for a while), she's realized that perhaps she has some depression she needs to deal with.

I know anti-depressants affect everyone differently, but I was hoping to get a cross section of opinions.

My wife and I have a decent relationship. I think we've become a bit disconnected over the years and I think her depression has a lot to do with it. I certainly contribute my share too, though.

I'm curious to know if your relationhip improved or changed. What about your sex life. Did it change for the better or worse?

I take paxil for anxiety and panic attacks. It has saved me and my marriage. I did all the compulsive things that your wife is doing. Obsessive / Compulsive disorder is another illness which many times goes hand in hand with depression and/or anxiety.

To answer your questions, Our relationship has improved drastically. I am back to myself and feel so much more relaxed and free to do things that I was afraid to do before. As for the sex life...I think the docs will tell you that this is a side effect that differs for everyone. I wondered about this myself and worried that it was going to affect me negatively. But it hasn't. It has actually improved. For me,I think because my anxiety is under control. If it is that great of a concern though, also seek professional help such as a psychiatrist. Seriously, they can help with mind over matter issues such as this.
Good luck and I hope your wife is feeling better soon. Don't expect anything overnight. It gradually will improve in the upcoming 3-6 weeks.

I've taken different antidepressants over the years and am currently on Paxil. Your wife may need to take antidepressants for the rest of her life. Like me, she may have a chemical imbalance in her brain. Paxil will lift her mood. It will take a while for it to reach a therapeutic level in her blood stream. In about 3 weeks she should begin to notice a difference in her mood. I hope that she is also in therapy/counseling to help her deal with her depression.

My husband has been wonderful throughout it all. I deal with depression, anxiety, panic attacks and borderline agoraphobia. He has a long history of heart disease. Through all of these difficulties our love has continued to grow stronger. We've been married 20 years and have a great relationship.

I believe you and your wife will see an improvement in your relationship. You may want to consider marriage counseling once she starts to feel better. It can't hurt. God bless you both!

A decrease in sex drive and ability to orgasm lasted 2 months...then my body got used to the drug and now I can live a normal life without depression and anxiety. Paxil saved my life and my marriage. Best of luck.

I've heard paxil is a bad drug. See if there's something else she can take.

Paxil will definitely help with her depression. Unfortunately, anti-depressants decrease the sex drive.
