You can link your old computer up to your new one and transfer the files between the two.

You can install the old hard drive into the new computer as a 2nd drive so you can access them or transfer them to the new computer's hard drive. This can be done temporarily if you still want to use the old computer. You can also get a program to hook the two computers together and transfer files.
What Internet service do you use? Many ISP's have a place where you can download photos and view them on-line at no cost. You could then transfer them back to your new computer.
If you are upgrading just the OS to Windows XP and not the whole computer, the XP Upgrade will not delete your personal files. Everything should still be there. Make sure your old computer will run XP OK.

I still using a computer with Windows 3.11 just because they end support not mean you have to buy a new computer. But, if you do, there are many options for downloading. You could buy an External Hard Drive, that what I use. Then it can be accessed by any and all computers you have. Jump Drives are another, but, may not hold everything and expensive. I bought a 120 Gb External Hard Drive on sale at Wal-Wort for about $75. It works great and I keep all my important stuff on it, and my computers. But, if a computer crash I have everything on the Hard Drive. Just copy the Whole folder with contents to the Hard Drive, fast and easy.

It's good to hear that you're finally upgrading.
You have a couple of options, and one of the best, and least expensive ways would be to buy and install a memory card reader and a camera memory card. (You can also transfer other files too.)
A memory card reader will cost about $20, and you should be able to find a 512MB memory card for under $50.
If you have an exceptionally large collection of pictures or files that you want to transfer, you can buy a 80GB or 120GB external hard drive. ($80-140) and transfer the files that way.
If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message.

You can download your photo's to a flashdrive or you can buy an external hard drive or some sort of backup devices, and keep your images there. I would suggest though, that what ever you use to store you images to, to keep them in a safe place. I would also suggest not loading them all back on to your new harddrive and just storing them for when you need them so you can save space on your new compuer.

Before you upgrade to another poor Windows product, take another look at the Macintosh. If you're into photos, iPhoto will work great for you.

Even thogh bill gates is withdrawing support for old versions of windows - they will still work - if you want to have a better operating system i.e. windows XP - go to Limewire.com and download it - there's plenty of versions available that have been cracked - if you can't find one, email me and i can send a copy to you.

Yes...there is also a faster way. You can store some of your pictures and other things online to a website. You get 25 GB of free storage which is plenty! Check it out!

Does your existing computer have a USB port? If so, you can transfer from one to the other.
If not, you have to d/l the pics to something else (cd, flashdrive, whatever)
