I have a 2000 Ford Focus with a check engine light on. The code reads P0171 System too lean. The car now is sputtering when idle and will die out on me sometimes. Let me know where I could check first to solve the problem. From what I have read, its getting to much air and not enough fuel. Maybe you car experts will be able to put 2 and 2 together with the sputtering when stopped at a light etc... Thanks for all your help :)

I did go to Autozone and thats where I got the code, however, it only tells you that and can mean alot of things. They did do it for free, but they said it could be numerous things. I'm looking for ideas of where to go next. TY everyone.

Check the mass air flow sensor. If its not working properly it will not let the correct amount of air mix with fuel. These sensors are not usually too expensive and fairly easy to replace. Good Luck!
