Or, if you know the company, try their web site.

Also most electronic parts stores have cross reference catalogs of ICs, Transistors, etc...

correct, google or yahoo! for it is your best bet, (big search engines for the win) generally you will find a stack load of IC DATASHEETS in the results. search for it as it appears on the chip, if you get no results try dropping a big off for example.

27C256-25 may return no results, so search for the parent 27C256
