I have at&t as my carrier. I want to purchase an unlocked motorola c139 off of ebay. Will this work? I have a sim card that is in my current phone. If I put my existing sim card into the new motorola, will I have the same phone number? Will cingular/att accept it? Do I need to call my service provider to tell them about the new device?

Yes it will work - everywhere except US, people buy service and cell phones separately (most cases). When you put the old SIM to your new phone it will have your number in the new phone. Yes all carriers accept it. You need not call the provider - they will know automatically since the IMEI (a serial number of phone) will be transmitted to the carrier automatically.

These are the cautionary statements:
* You may not get good technical support for phones not supported by the carrier.
* Make sure that the phone is unlocked - It may not work if it is locked

I would call them first. Give them the serial number to the phone. I forget what it is called, but they will be able to tell you if the phone is stolen. Also, they will tell you if they even cover the phone.

If the Ebay seller won't give you that serial number or whatever it is, don't buy from them..

Do this first, BEFORE bidding.

Edited to add: Okay, this unlocked thing is new for me. I was just checking out Ebay. I would contact your cell provider first, just to be sure that everything is alright with it first. The code I was telling you about before is probably something with the sim card.
