You are thinking of Korea - which is divided into North and South. North being communist and South which is a Republic.

It is united as a Communist state. That said, it is Communist mostly in name only. They certainly need to work on further Democratic reforms, but the economy has made many strides toward openness (otherwise, the US wouldn't have renormalized relations).
