The green iguana is 80% herbivorous, usually feeding on plants, fruits, leaves and flowers. Occasionally they will eat small vertebrate such as grasshoppers and cockroaches.
A large percentage of relatively young iguanas (5 to 8 years) die from kidney failure as a result of diets too high in protein (ie. use of insects or meat). The advice of any switched-on vet these days is the same: avoid using insect or any form of meat for iguanas. Of course, iguanas are inquisitive and opportunistic creatures and many will eat whatever you put in front of them. Just because they eat something doesn't mean it's good for them! So remember, NO crickets, mealworms, dog or cat food, or baby mice!

Iguanas don't recognize what we are trying to feed them as being proper food. They are attracted by certain shapes and colors, and may, like humans, get 'hooked' on junk foods, foods that either lack nutritional value or that are downright harmful to them, or foods that they are simply used to getting. This is a particular problem with pre-owned iguanas, iguanas being fed less than ideal diets, and those who have come from pet stores where they have been fed the generally inappropriate feed usually fed to them. One needs to learn how to deal with this syndrome, how to be patient, not give in, and eventually be rewarded with your iguana eating what it shou

Some do some don't, it depends on the type of iguana. Green and blue iguanas are strict veggie consumers, but they have to have some food value in the veggies. Iceberg lettuce would be like giving them cardboard. Mine likes bananas, apples and especially romaine lettuce.

Green Iguanas are VEGETARIANS. They need a wide variety of vegetable matter to do well in captivity. 80% of their diet should come from leafy greens. Iceberg lettuce should never be used. Green Iguanas should never be fed animal protein or insects of any sort.

especially young growing iguanas CAN be given some crickets or superworms (like mealworms, only bigger, preferrably just after molting when white color and soft) once a while, to get some protein boost. in their natiüral habitat they do so (unlike adults) and nobody takes it from them. they take visible interest in some insects to be sure. it is like treats to them. in captivity, adults are more often overfed than starved, so generally it is not recomended - they will get gout or kidney issues if fed alot meat!!!

Yes!! A little processed hamburger or pork sausage is no more dangerous to them than a cricket or goldfish.
