What do you get out of NOT doing it?
Whatever it is, what would have to happen or change for you to be WILLING to deal with it?

Pretty much everyone who responded tried to pass-off doing the RIGHT thing as an avoidance thing, when what I asked was about things that ought to be done but don't get done, for whatever reason.
I mean, -fear of death, whether our own or a loved one's -fear of poverty -fear of bad relationships -deciding to mind your own business -choosing to not waste energy -not taking sides on issues -doing something based on how high or low the risk -even an explanation as to why we avoid doing things ...all these are *perfectly* sensible responses to the issue of avoidance. I am very glad to see that some members of the human race still get it right. :)
However, these responses, although well intentioned, didn't tell me in what ways you perhaps 'avoid' yourself and your personal interests. The only person who *did* do that was auntb93, so I am passing the points to her.
Thanks to everyone though for responding - much appreciated!

Lots of things, actually. I confess to being a procrastinator. I put things off in the hope I won't have to do them at all. Like going down to the storage bin to see what I can find to put on eBay and sell. Like sewing up that dress I cut out months ago. Like finishing the quilts I have started (there are several). Like sorting out all the catalogs and old mail and stuff sitting around, so I can throw most of it in recycle and organize the few things I need to keep. Like most of the cleaning projects all over the apartment. Instead, I sit here answering your questions.

As the mother of 5 teens/young adults.I would have to say the thing I try to aviod is being expected to side with my own in their relationship issues!!
By not becomming involved I avoid the uncomfortableness(how's that for a word?) when they(child & partner) are all lovey dovey again.
To become involved my child would have to be getting hurt! Not just hurt but HURT.!!

Hello..A very profound question, that would bear not superficial answer.I would rather avoid to argue with so many ignorent people than deal with them.If I knew that there will be some impact, some positive outcome would sacrifice hours, discussing, conversing etc.only for the sake that would have the awareness that I will change their approach toward life,war,etc..

Stress! Who wants to deal with stress and their everyday issues? Not I! I think that stress becomes a general category for everything that you don't want to deal with. Why would you want to deal with stress? it can be overwhelming causing anxiety or bring you down causing depression-like symptoms. It can make you overeat or undereat, sleep excessively or suffer of insomnia. Stress is highly problematic and without good coping strategies, it can result in physical and psychological symptoms.
A time when one would attempt to face stressors within their lives may be when they absolutely cannot avoid it. It may be when they finally seek counseling and learn how to cope with their stress in a healthy, positive manner. Avoidance is a common strategy of dealing with stress. It may appear to resolve it, however, it may also just be a bottled up solution to deal with again later in life.

I'm afraid of being desperately poor, and my mother dying, she's fine now but, when her time comes I just don't want her have to suffer.
