I have lived and traveled all over the US, and I can tell you that the cheapest states to live in are the southern states. You have to keep in mind though that the cost of living is low, but so are the wages. If you're retiring that shouldn't be much of a problem. You can definitely buy acreage for a good price. But you're going to have to ask yourself what kind of climate you're willing to live in--somewhere hot all the time, muggy, humid, or do you want somewhere that's more moderate, with hot summers and cold winters?

You can buy acreage states like Oregon and Arizona for reasonable prices, too.

Northern maine.. or New Hampshire would be my pick.. new hampshire for the non existent sales tax (only state in the country)
and maine for the wildlife, mountains, lakes, and generally tranquil setting.
I have traveled most of the country and would find this the best place to spend the rest of my life.. close to everything but just far enough away for some much needed peace and quiet :)

Arkansas is one of the cheapest. The unofficial state motto... Thank God for Mississippi!

Mississippi is cheaper, but much hotter.

Arkansas will give you several choices.

The N.W. you have the foothills to the Ozark Mountains, rolling hills and cooler summer temperatures.

The S.E. is as flat as a pancake, and much warmer.

Everything else is between the two extremes.

BTW We have a low cost of living, but we aren't a state for poor uneducated people.
