I am considering the switch because of a program that I was going to install. I've read different opinions of both systems, both good and bad. I'd like more opinions. Thanks.

if you need windows 98 to access the info as well as XP then you should go with fat32. NTFS is able to address larger partitions than fat32 but they don't make drives that big yet anyway. The only other advantage that NTFS has is security features, such as encryption fat32 doesn't have any security features. I can't choose between the two really i have partitions in both formats used for various things. you just have to see which you like more.

ntfs scan disk checking is faster than fat 32.
ntfs allows larger single files whereas fat32 wont.
ntfs has indexing service fat32 doesnt.
ntfs can set security features fat32 cant,
totally ntfs is best and more reliable for using.

NTFS will not scatter your data across your hard drive like fat32 does. fat32 usually requires more defragging from time to time.
