Flowers that come back every year are called perennial. That's what you want is a Parrnell for your area. I have perennials in Texas, and love the fact that each year they will come back, better and stronger in the spring. No more wimpy; pay for it, put it in, it dies (few days), you repeat. It's a money drain.
Go to the web search; perennial plants for NJ, put in your zip, or city or something, it's important to get plants that are good for your geography. Then pick the most hardy to begin with, with success you will move on to the more challenging plants

I think you are in a very similar zone as me - 5 or 6. When you are buying your perennials - whatever you choose, make sure you pay attention to when they bloom. Some will bloom all summer, like coneflower, black eyed susans, etc, some will bloom for a month or two like garden phlox (smells great), and some just for a couple weeks, like oriental lillies, gladiolas, azealas. Some are good for shade, some for sun; some for wet areas, some for dry. What type of soil do you have? Is it sandy, clay or good rich dirt. Go to your best greenhouse/nursery and ask them what they recommend. Or better yet, take a walk in your neighborhood and see what is doing well - ask your neighbors if they are perennials! Some are vines, like clematis, some are short and tiny, like spreading phlox that blooms only in late spring. Some are invasive, like mint and trumpet vine, so be careful with what you choose. Most gardeners plant what they like and just wait and see if it is something to keep, or give away or move to another location. Some take a lot of work to keep looking good like roses (but not all roses take a lot of work). So, nobody can really answer your question based on the limited info you gave, but wish you well on your quest!

Wow, there are so many possibilities! Find a good farm stand or flower nursery and ask. What to plant depends so much on soil type, drainage, sun or shade, how much space, etc. Bulbs as several have said are a great option. Say, daffodils, crocus and tulip for spring, iris for early summer, begonia for midsummer, etc so then something new is always coming

seem on the information superhighway for a nursery and verify decrease than perennials. they arrive decrease back 12 months after 12 months. There are trees, dwarf trees and numerous different flora. a tenet, counting on the place they are buried, a dwarf Dogwood. verify on your starting to be zone and see what's appropriate to your section. Roses are beautiful, yet could desire to be pruned each and every 12 months to produce healthful blooms. There are different that don't require a lot of maintenance. good success

Daylilies. They come in lots of different varieties, take practically no care (that's why you see so many that have naturalized and are growing along the side of the road), and multiply rapidly, so you do need to dig them up and divide them every couple of years--when they start getting crowded.

ANY kind of lilies. My favorite is the Stargazer. BEAUTIFUL. I have seen these 6 feet tall. Awesome. You can get cheap bags of bulbs at Wal-Mart, they are being marked down this time of the year. Look for any kind of bulbs in the fall when they are REALLY cheap.
Have fun!

Bulbs are the ticket sweetie, try daffodils, crocus, tulips etc....if you would rather have a shrub try lilacs, forsythia or peoniess...if you see ants on the peonie buds don't worry they help to pollinate them believe it or not...enjoy :)
