It means the person has not been on the computer.
For instance if you step away from your comp, your screensaver goes on.
Well, your idle sign goes up if you do that on AIM

Idle means that the user has not touched the computer/AIM for a specified length of time, yo. You can set after how long you want AIM to show you as idle in your status menu, yadidamean? Idle shows that a person is probably not going to read your IM until they come back, or that they forgot to set an away message.

idle? It means you haven't been on in a while. Like no activity. You can change the time at which you will turn idle too.

idle means when you are on but you are away. but it's different from an away message. it's when the name on your list turns grayish instead of black. you choose an amount of time and if that person doesn't do anything on AIM (because they aren't there or just aren't doing anything) their names turns gray on your list.

When you have not been speaking for a while, so they think you have probably went away from the computer without signing off or putting on an away message.
