Depending on what part of the lake you are looking at moving to will influence your route. Hwy 281 runs to the north of the lake and will get you to SA in about 20 minutes , you can get 281 to Austin not sure about the travel time. A brand new high school is being built in the Canyon Lake area right now. FM 306 which is the primary road that runs to the lake from New Braunfels to 281 has multiple schools which have been built in the past 5 years and new developments are going up fast.

I will be honest with you, traffice is a b***h. With all the construction and stop and go traffice, good luck. yes there is another way around the lake, but don't waist your time. You will most definelty get caught behind some grandma with her Cadillac. If you leave early enough you will be fine, but who wants to wake up at 3:00 in the morning? I know the view is amazing, but you will need to set your priorities. Maybe consider an apartment during the week. Good luck and enjoy the drive.
